The popular gathering place in town, Pete's Place, was established by former jockey J.W. "Pete" Ormes.  In 1933 Ormes moved to a corner location that became the social center of Valley Springs.  Along with food, drink, and dance bands, illegal gambling and nortorious women were also available.  An elderly Pete was brutally murdered in his cafe in the 1970s when robbers demanded money, and Pete refused.
